چکیده

This mini review contains a brief update on the pathogenicity of Staphylococcus epidermidis in ocular infections and it’s capability of biofilm formation and adhesion on the materials used in intraocular lens implants in cataract surgery patients. The review also gives an update on the genetic and molecular aspects in the understanding of biofilm formation by S. epidermidis strains on medical implants. A better understanding is needed to evaluate therapeutic strategies against S. epidermidis population.

Impact of slime dispersants and anti-adhesives on in vitro biofilm formation of Staphylococcus epidermidis on intraocular lenses and on antibiotic activities.

OBJECTIVES Infectious endophthalmitis has occurred despite the use of antibiotics in irrigating solutions during implantation of intraocular lenses (IOLs). This infection is generally resistant to antibiotic therapy and, therefore, removal of the implant is necessary before eradication of the infection. This study was designed to assess the role of chosen dispersants and anti-adhesives in inhib...

Biofilm formation on intraocular lenses by a clinical strain encoding the ica locus: a scanning electron microscopy study.

PURPOSE To determine whether the Staphylococcus epidermidis strain carries the intercellular adhesion (ica) locus, which encodes production of adhesins mediating adherence to biomaterials and to study, with scanning electron microscopy, the morphologic features of this coagulase-negative Staphylococcus strain that adheres to intraocular lenses (IOLs). METHODS Polymerase chain reaction amplifi...

Biofilm Formation by Staphylococcus epidermidis on Foldable and Rigid Intraocular Lenses

BACKGROUND Biofilm formation of Staphylococcus epidermidis is a major etiological factor of inducing device-related infections. OBJECTIVES The ability of biofilm formation by the S. epidermidis was assessed in vitro on two brands of foldable (hydrophilic) and two brands of rigid (hydrophobic) intraocular lens materials in order to investigate the role of lens material in postoperative endopht...

Bacterial adherence of Staphylococcus epidermidis to intraocular lenses: a bioluminescence and scanning electron microscopy study.

PURPOSE To analyze and compare the adherence of Staphylococcus epidermidis to intraocular lenses (IOLs) made of five different biomaterials (native or heparinized polymethylmethacrylate, silicone, hydrophilic acrylic, or hydrogel) and to detail the different steps and mechanisms of bacterial adhesion to a polymer. METHODS A clinical strain carrying the intercellular adhesion (ica) locus was u...

Phenotypic Investigation of Biofilm Formation and the Prevalence of icaA and icaD Genes in Staphylococcus epidermidis Isolates

Background and Aims: The most important factor for pathogenicity of Staphylococcus epidermidis is the ability to produce biofilm. Identification of biofilm-forming strains using an appropriate method and recognizing the mechanisms of biofilm formation can help understand the proper use of artificial medical equipment and prevent increased drugs resistance . The aim of this study was to 1) evalu...
